Thermostats 101
Thermostats are one of those things in our life that are taken for granted but play a very large role in our daily enjoyment of life. Below are some general topics that should be considered when choosing the right thermostat for your particular application.
Mechanical or Electronic (digital) – There are two types of thermostats sold today.
- Mechanical thermostats use a piece of metal that flexes as the temperature changes. As this metal flexes it will close a contact that will turn on your heating or cooling system. Some of these models contain Mercury, especially older models that may be in your home today. Mercury is a hazardous substance - contact your local waste management authority for proper disposal procedures.
- Electronic or Digital Thermostat – Electronic thermostats, sometime referred to as digital thermostats, are the most common type sold in today’s market. It is easy to spot an electronic thermostat because most will have an electronic display that shows the room temperature.
Advantages of Electronic Thermostats
- Mercury Free – The installation of thermostats containing mercury has been outlawed in several states. This trend is likely to continue because the mercury free alternatives have become lower in price and much more reliable than those of 15 years ago.
- Easy to Read Display – Most modern thermostats have a large lighted display. These displays are much easier to read than the older thermometer style designs. Some models even have a light button that can be pressed to activate the display light.
- Comfort – Electronic thermostats can maintain a comfort level that is better than the old mechanical style models. Most electronic thermostats are designed with an adjustable comfort level so you can customize your thermostat to your comfort preference.
Programming – Modern, electronic thermostats have been designed to allow you to program your schedule so that the heating or cooling automatically changes when you are away from home or sleeping. This makes your heating and cooling system work less often and therefore reduces your energy bill. You will see many programming options, the most common are 5+2 (one program for the weekday and one program for the weekend, 5+1+1 (one program for the weekday, one for Saturday and one for Sunday) and 7 day (each day of the week has it’s own program).
